Electricity Maps just released its newest datasets for 2024, providing location-based electricity data with hourly granularity, covering over 160 zones.

About the datasets

As part of our ongoing commitment to decarbonizing the electricity grid, we offer free historical data to enable organizations around the globe to adopt more granular carbon accounting practices. The datasets include:

  • Open data in CSV format (licensed under the Open Database License (ODbL))
  • Location-based electricity emission factors for 160+ zones and 50+ countries
  • Key signals, including flow-traced carbon intensity (direct and life cycle assessment), low-carbon percentage, and renewable energy percentage
  • Hourly, daily, monthly, and yearly temporal granularity

Many more zones are planned to be included in the future as we continue to expand our coverage and improve data accessibility.

How to get started

Returning users to our data portal might notice changes in how the historical datasets are retrieved. The new portal enhances accessibility, allows account-based access to data, and enables batch downloads with a single login.

Simply create an account with your email address to access all historical datasets available in one place.

Why we offer free datasets

Accurate measurement and reporting of carbon emissions are critical first steps toward decarbonizing the electricity grid. The growing integration of renewable energy sources like wind and solar add further variability to the power mix and carbon intensity, making granular carbon accounting even more important.

Acquiring this data on grid emissions can be challenging and expensive. By openly providing granular, location-based historical data on carbon emissions from electricity generation, we enable companies to assess their emissions more accurately — avoiding reliance on yearly averages that miss crucial fluctuations.

This open data is compliant with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol's Scope 2 Guidance, making it a reliable resource for companies to enhance their sustainability reporting and get a first understanding of their Scope 2 emissions to drive meaningful action.
