Vision
A vision towards a truly decarbonized electricity system
Driven by the urgent need to get rid of all fossil fuels, the world is in the midst of the most profound transformation in humankind's history.
The single largest source of greenhouse gases come from fossil fuels being burned as a source of energy. The most promising solution is to electrify our usage of energy, while ensuring that the source of electricity itself becomes fossil-free, every second of the year.
Amongst clean sources of electricity such as solar, wind, nuclear and hydro, some of them are intermittent, meaning they don’t produce clean electricity every second of the year. This requires rethinking the power system, orchestrating it in ways that balance supply and demand at all times. Without real-time data, this task would be nearly impossible.
We foresee a world where granular data is used to bring back physical representativeness into electricity accounting, and where any grid-connected system reacts to grid conditions in real-time in order to reduce their cost and emissions.

Our Story
Founded in 2016
At the beginning of 2016, founder and CEO Olivier Corradi became obsessed with how real-time data could act as a catalyst to decarbonize our electricity system. Claims of being "100% renewable" every second of the year
As wind and solar production fluctuate throughout the day, there was a clear need to bring transparency about the real-time carbon footprint of electricity. As this real-time information about the physical origin of electricity will be scrutinized and challenged by many parties, the effort has to be collaborative, open, and transparent.
This is what motivated the creation of Electricity Maps. It started as an open source real-time data visualization in June 2016 and turned into a comprehensive data platform serving millions of requests and powering leading global enterprises.
